			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Seattle, Washington &#8211; At the Center for Spiritual Living in Seattle we serve a large and fluctuating population of children on Sundays during our 2 services in 6 different classes.  We have adapted the curriculum through 5<sup>th</sup> grade, with the older kids helping to tell the stories to younger children. The ideas and principles presented also are used to inspire our middle school and teen curriculum along the same lines.  We have been able to use each of the Secret of the Heart units for an entire month, sharing the story each week in different ways, utilizing the various menus of arts and crafts projects, worksheets and activities to support the week’s particular focus and added a few activities of our own.  We’ve tied the unit into our annual theme and the monthly themes.  For example, our 2012 Theme is “Heaven on Earth”.  We began January’s monthly theme with “Appreciate the Good”, using “The Hidden Treasure” with its Secret of the Heart as Gratitude as our central</p>
<p><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/HT-flat.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1833" title="Young Masters:  The Hidden Treasure" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/HT-flat-300x270.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="270" /></a> content and principle.  We use a consistent format for our order of activities, very similar to your listing, but shortened to handle each week’s actual time available for lessons.  I provide a monthly summary with an adult contemplation to help teachers prepare both in consciousness and spiritual practice as well as referencing the page numbers and activities to be covered.  Sometimes, we find and additional story related to the theme that we add on a 3<sup>rd</sup> or 4<sup>th</sup> Sunday.  February’s theme is “Be Courageous in Faith” utilizing “Heart of a Lion” and Courage as the Secret of the Heart.</p>
<p><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/YM-Pledge-Selma.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1988" title="The Young Masters Pledge - Selma" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/YM-Pledge-Selma-199x300.jpg" alt="" width="199" height="300" /></a>I have found the Young Master’s Little Wisdom Series Books, CDs and curriculum inspiring, not only for the children but for the adults using it.  It has deepened everyone’s practice and understanding of principle in fun ways. It has encouraged our children to put their learning into practice in their daily lives and to share these ideas with friends and family.  Everyone especially loves the music!  As the Manager for Youth &amp; Family Ministries at Center For Spiritual Living, Seattle and as a musician, educational consultant and curriculum writer, I find this series an excellent addition to our enriching programs.  I would highly recommend these books and CDs to parents and for spiritual centers like ours to use the curriculum in their programs, adapting them as needed to their particular population , resources and time guidelines.  For us, the six units provided six months of curriculum basics.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Voorhees, New Jersey &#8211; The children of Naudain Academy were excited to learn about The Hidden Treasure today and as they discovered the next <em>Secret Of The Heart</em>.   Students had several guesses before Stephanie Pelly, the program facilitator, revealed the <em>secret</em>.   &#8220;Is it love, friendship or sharing with your friends?&#8221; they asked.</p>
<p>Stephanie slowly drew the the word <em>gratitude </em>from her special container.  This was a new word for most of the children, so she explained that <em>gratitude</em> means being thankful.  She also explained that being grateful is showing appreciation for people or things in your life.</p>
<p>The children were excited to hear the story from the Young Masters Little Wisdom book,  <em>The Hidden Treasure. </em>They<a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/IMG_1719.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2175" title="Learning about " src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/IMG_1719-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a> began to understand that while it&#8217;s wonderful to receive gifts, the true gift is being thankful.  They discussed the many things for which Butaan and Phylos were grateful for in the story and after the story they shared all for which <em>they</em> were grateful as a class.</p>
<p>Then Stephanie passed around a red gift box and told the children that there was a wonderful, amazing, awesome, super, fantastic and great gift inside.  In fact it&#8217;s the greatest gift.  She told them they could all have a chance to peek and see it, but they would need to keep the gift a surprise until each person discovered the gift themselves.  One by one the gift box was passed as each child took a peek inside.  She repeated, &#8220;thank you for being here, you are a gift!&#8221;  as one by one they each looked inside the box and saw a star mirror and  - their own face looking back at them.  Some children got it right away&#8230; some took a moment to realize that they are the gift.  It&#8217;s who they are and all that they can share with other.  Some were a little confused and didn&#8217;t see themselves as a gift, so after each person had a turn Stephanie asked, &#8220;So what is this wonderful, amazing awesome, super, fantastic and great gift?&#8221;  One little boy raised his hand and said, &#8221; Each one of us is a gift to the world!&#8221;  &#8221;Exactly,&#8221; Stephanie said.  &#8221;We can share our smiles and friendship with people every day! We each have something to give. Something for which to be truly thankful.&#8221;   She then asked the children to share some of the gifts they can give to others.  Immediately they chimed in, &#8220;friendship, imagination, love, kindness, sharing and playing together.&#8221; &#8220;Yes, all the secrets of the heart,&#8221; said Stephanie.</p>

<p><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/IMG_1727.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2176" title="The imaginary gift!" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/IMG_1727-300x224.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="224" /></a>Stephanie then told the children she was going to use her imagination to give each child a gift.  One child said, &#8220;we learned all about imagination in the book <em>The Magic Eye</em>.  They remembered.  She went on to tell them that  in order to receive the gift she was giving them, she would need to use her imagination&#8230; and so would they.  One by one she pulled out &#8220;imaginary gifts&#8221;  and placed <em>something</em> inside each child&#8217;s hand or around their necks or once in awhile I even rolled a special gift to a child.  Every child said &#8220;thank you&#8221; and said they were grateful for their gifts.  One child said&#8230; &#8220;I know what my gift is, a baseball.&#8221;  Another child said, &#8220;You gave me sparkles.&#8221;  &#8221;My gift was a mircophone!&#8221; &#8220;I got a telescope.&#8221;  &#8221;I got a necklace.&#8221;  One child pondered long and hard and might still be thinking about what his gift really was.  &#8221;You can think about it while you&#8217;re in bed tonight, &#8221; Stephanie said, and added, &#8220;I gave you each my love with your gift&#8230;and that&#8217;s the best gift.&#8221;</p>
<p>They sang &#8220;Circle of Appreciation&#8221; and had fun playing a game where the students got to point to all their different friends during the song.  They loved this song and game.  The lesson ended as they passed  around earth ball and shared the many gifts they earth gives to us.  &#8221;Something for which we are are very grateful,&#8221; said Stephanie, &#8220;to be on this beautiful Earth with our families and friends.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>1. When did you start writing and</em><em> </em><em>what inspired you to start?</em></p>
<p>I wrote a little bit when I was a child  but I never really thought of becoming a writer until I was an adult. What inspired me was really strange. One day I was reading my brothers blog. He was just playing around and making up a fantasy story. I thought he was really good and thought &#8221;<em>Hey, I could do that!&#8221; </em>So I sat down, started writing a fantasy story about something we used to play as kids and I haven’t stopped writing since.</p>
<p><em>2. How do you choose the topics for your books?  What&#8217;s your age range?</em></p>
<p>The age range that I find the most enjoyable to write for is 4-8 yrs. old. They are still so imaginative at that age and in love with learning new things. They also say some of the funniest things! As far as how do I choose topics for my book, it’s all up to how I’m feeling on any given day. If something inspires me, then I write about it.</p>
<p><em><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Allyn-Stotz.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2168" title="Children's author Allyn Stotz" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Allyn-Stotz-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a>3. What kinds of things inspire you to write?</em></p>
<p>All sorts of things inspire me. If I hear a child say something funny, I’m inspired. If a co-worker tells me something hysterical or unusual that their child did, I’m inspired. If I see a movie or TV show where something amazing happens, that inspires me as well. Reading other books also inspires me. The world is full of inspiration; you just have to be open to it!</p>
<p><em>4. Have any of your stories been inspired by real people or events?  What inspires you to write?</em></p>
<p>Yes, A lot of my stories do contain something about a person I knew or an event that happened in my past. I once wrote a story about two little old ladies who lived next door to us when I was growing up. They were very sweet ladies but a little on the unusual side because they had never been married, lived in a little white house, and had hundreds of salt-n-pepper shakers all over the place. They left a great memory in my mind so I just had to include them in my story writing.</p>
<p>I’ve also written quite a few stories about pets I’ve had or currently have.</p>
<p><em>5. Do you work on more than one book at a time?</em></p>
<p><em>Oh yes. I don’t know how smart or good that is, but I’m usually working on at least four or five stories at a time. Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming but I find that I am constantly coming up with new ideas and just have to get them on paper. However, when you are working on so many stories at one time, it tends to prevent you from completing any one item, therefore it slows you down from getting things completed and out the door. I need to work on focusing on one story at a time!</em></p>

Are you signed exclusively with a publisher?  Are you self -published and how does that work for you?</em></p>
<p><em>I am signed with FutureWord Publishing for my book The Pea In Peanut Butter.</em></p>
<p><em>7. Do you write every day and do you have set hours that you work?  Where do you write?</em></p>
<p><em>Yes, I write or do something with my writing every single day. There is so much involved with writing that it’s nearly impossible not to be involved in it every day. However, sometimes I spend more time marketing, blogging, and doing administrative things that my total time in a week actually writing is probably only four hours. It just depends on what I have going on and what deadlines I have.</em></p>
<p><em>I don’t have set hours to write because I also work a full-time job elsewhere. I have to fit my writing time in around that.</em></p>
<p><em>I do some of my writing at work in between busy times, and at home on my laptop in the evenings and weekends. I have a designated room to do that.</em></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><em>8 .Has anyone ever written you a fan letter that you’d like to share?</em></p>
<p><em>My book has only been published since June 2011 so the word is still getting out about it. However, I once received an email from someone whose children read my book. She said it’s their favorite book at present and they keep trying to memorize the beginning of the book which reads:</em></p>
<p><em>I love the super duper, gummy yummy, sticky lickin’, and belly rubbin’ taste of peanut butter. If Mommy would let me, I’d spread it on hot dogs, fish sticks, chips, and pancakes. I’d eat it on bananas, grapes, apples, and frosted flakes.</em></p>
<p><em> And to me, that is what it’s all about for me. Knowing that a child smiled and enjoyed my story!</em></p>
<p><em>9.  Who was the first character you ever created and why?</em></p>
<p><em>I don’t remember the first character I ever created because it was back in grade school. However, I do remember the first PLACE I created. It was a land of nothing but peanut butter. And surprisingly, my first published picture book, is about peanut butter as well! Hmmm, guess it’s a no-brainer that I love peanut butter!</em></p>
<p><em>10. Is there anything about yourself that you’d like to share &#8211; hobbies,where you were born, special talents other than writing/illustrating?</em></p>
<p><em>I was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan but was raised in Edgerton, Ohio. When I turned 22 or so, I moved to St. Louis with my husband. From there his job has transferred us to Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and back to Louisiana where we currently reside. I have many other hobbies. I read a lot, dabble around with stained glass, do interior decorating, and at work I do a lot of graphic design type things.</em></p>

Young Masters Little Wisdom Discovery Program for Montessori" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/IMG_1709-300x231.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="231" /></a> Today they played imagination games, beginning with <em>The Magic Circle.</em> One child at a time came up to the front of a classroom and began using their imagination to create something in the hula hoop.  One girl pretended the hula hoop was a mirror and she held it up to look at herself and strated to brush her hair.  Classmates took turns guessing what she was doing.  Another child pretended <em>The Magic Circle</em> was a garden of beautiful flowers.  One by one she picked a flower and brought it up to her nose to smell its fragrance.  Another young boy imagined he was typing on a computer. Even Stephanie took a turn, making a big snowball and throwing it at one of the children.  Lots of fun!</p>
<p>The second game they played was <em>Magic Ball</em>.  Stephanie used her imagination as she pretended to pull a magic ball out of her pocket.  She bounced it and tossed it in the air.  Finally, she called someone&#8217;s name and threw to them.  Using their imagination they caught the ball with both hands and passed it to a friend next to them.  The imaginary ball moved around the circle being rolled, tossed and thrown across the room even like a pitcher does in a baseball game.  Sometimes the ball grew really really big and sometime the magic ball became very small.  The children got a chance to stretch their power of imagination.</p>
<p>The last group activity for the day was story time.  Everyone worked together to create a story.  Stephanie began by holding up a microphone.  &#8221;Once upon a time,&#8221; she said.  The next child held the mic and<a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/IMG_1700.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2149" title="Everybody has a story to tell.  Young Masters Little Wisdom Discovery Program for Montessori" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/IMG_1700-292x300.jpg" alt="" width="292" height="300" /></a> continued, &#8220;There was a little boy.&#8221;  The story unfolded with each child speaking into the microphone to add their new idea.  It went something like this:  &#8221;A little boy was watching tv&#8230; and then he saw something on the news&#8230; he got scared and then went into his bedroom&#8230; and began dreaming&#8230;he dreamed about a door that was opening&#8230; and then he heard someone calling his name&#8230;he woke up only&#8230; to later hear his alarm clock ringing&#8230; he was just dreaming.&#8221;  The children cooperated by taking turns and their story was told.  &#8221;We all have a story to tell,&#8221; said Stephanie.</p>
<p>The program ended today by singing <em>Thank You For Being Here</em> and then they quietly laid their heads down to listen to some soft, gentle music.  This was one more opportunity to use their imaginations.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Voorhees, New Jersey</em> &#8211; Naudain Academy, a Montessori school, continued their quest this week to make sure their children have a well-rounded education by once again embarking on their journey to the <em>Secrets of the Heart </em>via the Young Masters Little Wisdom Discovery program which began in November.   The first day back at school from holiday vacation was right on target.  A brief conversation with three teachers on their lunch break about the holiday gifts children received revealed how so many gifts have to do with technology and that they usually require batteries or electricity and call for little use of imagination.  &#8221;How ironic,&#8221; Stephanie replied,  &#8221;that&#8217;s today&#8217;s lesson.  It&#8217;s all about imagination.  Something for which you don&#8217;t need batteries or electricity.&#8221;  They agreed that technology is important, but that nurturing a children&#8217;s creative play and imagination and encouraging children to understand  how powerful their imaginations are, is essential.  &#8221;Imagination is more important than knowledge,&#8221; said Albert Einstein.</p>

<p><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/IMG_1648.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2129" title="Stephanie Pelly teaches the Young Masters LIttle Wisdom Discovery Program" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/IMG_1648-237x300.jpg" alt="" width="237" height="300" /></a>After a very warm welcome from the children, they asked, &#8220;are we going to begin with the Young Masters pledge?&#8221;  &#8221;Of course,&#8221; Stephanie said, as  they all stood up and proudly shared the words.  &#8221;I promise to use my gifts everyday, in every way, for I am a Young Master. Peace!&#8221;  As the word peace resounds louder and louder each week, Stephanie realizes that their understanding of the gifts they are learning about is beginning to set in.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today there is another gift to discover, a new <em>Secret of the Heart.</em> Today we&#8217;ll  be reading a new book by Bunny Hull called <em>The Magic Eye,&#8221; </em>said Stephanie.  &#8221;Before I share the story,&#8221; she asked,  &#8221;does anyone know what a <em>Magic Eye</em> is?&#8221;  One child said, &#8220;my dreams,&#8221; another  said, &#8220;it&#8217;s when you see love!&#8221;  One little girl said, &#8220;it&#8217;s what you see at night when your eyes are closed.&#8221;  Revelations out of the mouths of babes.  &#8221;Brilliant ideas,&#8221; Stephanie said, as she pulled out the next <em>Secret of The Heart</em>.  &#8221;Your Magic Eye boys and girls is your imagination.  Artists use their Imagination when they create.  A story writer and song writer use their imagination when they think about the characters for their stories and words for their songs.  &#8221;Do you use your imagination?&#8221; Stephanie asked, &#8221; do you use it on the playground or while you&#8217;re driving in the car with their parents?  How about when you&#8217;re deciding what to wear in the morning.&#8221;  &#8221;Yes!, the children said.&#8221;Can you use your imagination when we you&#8217;re laying in bed or feeling bored?  Does your imagination cost anything to use?&#8221;  &#8221;No,&#8221; they said, it&#8217;s free.  &#8221;What a powerful gift we have,&#8221; Stephanie said,  &#8221;and it doesn&#8217;t even cost anything to use.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Today Butaan and Phylos, the characters in the book, are going to teach us different ways they use their imagination,&#8221; said Stephanie,  and I think instead of me reading the book today we&#8217;re going to listen to Saphinne.  She&#8217;s the storyteller who reads the story on the CD.&#8221;  The children loved the story and were amazed how Phylos could use his imagination when he was afraid of the dark.  The children learned from the story that their imagination  is in their mind.   It&#8217;s the pictures you see and create in your mind.  It&#8217;s your <em>Magic Eye</em>.</p>
<p>After listening to the story and looking at the pictures, Stephanie put on some quiet music, turned off the lights and told the children that they were going to practice using their imagination, just as if they were laying in bed&#8230; in the dark.  The children closed their eyes and put their heads down.  After a few minutes Stephanie started to count backwards 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.  Then she asked the children to sit up and share what they saw with their <em>Magic Eye</em>.  &#8221;I was at the beach,&#8221; said one.  &#8221; I was playing in the snow,&#8221; said another. &#8221; I was laying in my bed under the covers and I was flying.&#8221;   &#8220;I imagined I was picking flowers&#8221;.  &#8221;How beautiful,&#8221; said Stephanie. &#8220;What wonderful imaginations you have!&#8221;</p>
<p>Stephanie asked the children if they could draw a picture about what they saw with their <em>Magic Eye </em>or write a story or create a song using their imagination.  They all agreed they could.   An activity for their journals to carry them through the week.</p>
<p>Stephanie told the children that each and every one of us is born with a <em>Magic Eye</em> and that they can use it at any time, anywhere for their whole life. &#8220;How about that!&#8221;</p>

<p>What is a Young Master?  Someone born with gifts.  A Young Master is YOU.  This is what each and every child in the extension program at Naudain Academy is learning.  They are indeed Young Masters.  This week they continued to explore <em>friendship </em>as they reviewed  the <em>Secret of The </em><em>Heart</em> they are focusing on for the first month.  They began as always.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2091" title="The Young Master's Pledge" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1524-248x300.jpg" alt="" width="248" height="300" />&#8220;Let&#8217;s stand and say the Young Masters Pledge,&#8221; said Stephanie Pelly, the program&#8217;s director.  Proudly they stood with peace sign over their hearts and said  the pledge with and without the CD.   &#8221;I promise to use my gifts every day, in every way, for I am a Young Master.  The children already remember the pledge and state it with great enthusiasm.&#8221; said Stephanie. &#8220;With each meeting they understand a little more, what it means.&#8221;</p>
<p>They reviewed the book they read at their first meeting.  Many children recalled not only the title of the book  <em>The Friendship Seed</em>, but  were also able to share the author&#8217;s name, Bunny Hull and the illustrator Kye Fleming.  They discussed the names of the characters in the story and she then asked them if they could remember, &#8220;what was the <em>Friendship Seed</em> that was shared in the story&#8230;who can tell me?&#8221; she asked.  Together the children cheered &#8211; a smile.</p>
<p>They talked about how plants and flowers grow transition from a tiny seed and  how a friendship can grow from one single smile.  They talked about how it&#8217;s important to take care of our friendships, to nurture them and they explored how to do that.  Together the class created a &#8220;friendship flower.&#8221; On each petal they wrote an idea that could help their friendships grow in school.  They could &#8220;be kind&#8221;, one child said,  &#8221;and say kind words.&#8221; Another child said, &#8220;I could help a friend or cheer a them up if they were sad.&#8221;  They  talked about how<a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1543.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2092" title="The Friendship Flower" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1543-300x235.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="235" /></a> they could &#8220;include others,&#8221; or &#8220;share with a friend.&#8221;  &#8221;What about unkind words,&#8221; asked Stephanie. &#8221; Those are like weeds that don&#8217;t help friendships grow,&#8221; they all agreed. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want those in our garden!&#8221;</p>
<p>Stephanie then invited one child at a time to come to the front of the classroom and hold a &#8220;friendship flower&#8221;, this was a beautiful red rose that she had brought to class.  Each child said something they liked about their friend, until everyone had a turn.  This activity made each child feel that what they had to say was indeed important and valued. They were showing kindness to their friend.</p>
<p>The children were given an activity sheet to take away so they could complete their own friendship flower at home and discuss it with their families. The Young Masters Journals were introduced for the  first time.   The children were excited about receiving their new books which will allow them to track their journey of discovery as they learn how to use the Secrets of the Heart.</p>
<p><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1579.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2093" title="The Young Masters Little Wisdom Journal" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1579-289x300.jpg" alt="" width="289" height="300" /></a> Before the program ended they listened to new songs from the Friendship Seed CD and sang THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE in English and Swahili, which they learned was the language of Kenya.  Finally they listened to <em>Hey Young Masters </em>and played air guitar as began to learn the words. &#8220;The music is one more important way the children begin to grasp the very important concepts they&#8217;re learning,&#8221; said Stephanie.</p>
<p>It was good day at Naudain today as the children moved one step closer to learning what powerful little beings they are and how their creativity as Young Masters can create a world of friendship, for them and for the world they live in.  They&#8217;re learning they make a difference.  Stay tuned for the next adventure as the children of Naudain Academy continue their quest to the Secrets of the Heart.</p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium;">Donna: Thank you so much for the opportunity to interview with you.  We both just love your website.  You offer such a refreshing and inspiring view of the world.</span></p>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p><em>1. </em><em>Did you write stories when you were growing up? at school? Or at home. As a hobby? As a young child, or as a teenager, or both?</em></p>
<p>Donna:   I did write as a child.  I began when I was still in elementary school copying my favorite poems and story passages into a spiral notebook that I took everywhere.  And I committed these passages to memory.  Even today, 40 years later, these memorized passages spring to mind at unexpected moments.  In middle school, I moved from copying and memorizing, to mimicking in my own writing what I liked in the writing of others.  I didn’t know it at the time, but I was doing what all writers do – I was journaling.  I began making my own observations about people or places or events that moved me, and I wrote about them, learning to use words to evoke feelings in others.  To this day I journal.  Sometimes it is random thoughts.  Sometimes I journal to respond to a moving homily I hear at church, or to an article I read in the newspaper, a beautiful sunset, or any other topic that moves me.</p>
<p>Rosemarie:   I was an ardent fan of Lois Lane and Brenda Starr. I wanted nothing more than to be a newspaper reporter! My</p>
<p>friend and I used to make up stories to write. I was paid  for an anecdote published in <em>Readers Digest</em> when I was 12 years old and thought I had made the big time. I submitted two more anecdotes and never heard back, so I stopped submitting. While I was in Nursing School I wrote the majority of our yearbook, putting a short, descriptive poem under each picture and a narrative synopsis of our three years at school. Then as a new mom, I amused myself by writing humorous poems about things I didn&#8217;t like to do or if I had a cold&#8211;ie. <em>An Ode to Dirty Dishes</em></p>
<p>and <em>A Code in da Node.</em></p>
<p><em>2. </em> <em>When you were a child did you ever have moments when you decided that you were going to be a writer when you grew up?</em></p>

<p>Donna:  I can’t say there was a single moment when it occurred to me that I could be a writer.  I know that by the time I was in high school I was writing plays and stories and poems, and I hoped to go to college to learn to</p>
<p>write.  It was an evolving dream of mine.  More a passion.  First was the need to write.  It was later, after college, that the desire was born to have my writing read by a wider audience than my family and friends – hence the journey into the world of publishing.</p>
<p><em>3. </em><em> How do you choose the topics for your books?  What&#8217;s your age range?</em></p>
<p>Rosemarie:  The topics for our books were chosen because we both had a need to say what we felt. Our first book, <em>Little Acts of Grace</em>, was written for preschool children as a result of our desire to afford children of today the comfort of knowing, believing in and praising God. Donna wanted to share her thoughts about Mary, the mother of Jesus. So we wrote <em>Just Like Mary</em>, also for very young children. Our third book, <em>The Mass Book</em>, was a suggestion from the publisher and targeted second graders.</p>
<p>Donna:  When Rosemarie and I began writing together, our grandchildren were in preschool.  Our books have grown up with our grandkids.  As for how we choose what to write, sometimes I think our topics choose us.  Rosemarie and I are co authors, but our third partner is God.  We truly feel our topics are inspired by Him.</p>
<p><em>4. </em><em>What kinds of things inspire you to write?</em></p>
<p>Rosemarie:  Love inspires me to write. I write about people I love, people who love, and the places and memories I love. I am inspired by the joys and sorrows of everyday life.</p>
<p><em>5. </em><em>What gave you the idea for your very first book?</em></p>
<p>Rosemarie:   Donna and I met by accident&#8211;or Divine intervention&#8211; at a church dinner. We had<a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Mass-cover.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2073" title="Mass For Children" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Mass-cover.jpg" alt="" width="192" height="298" /></a> each been on a Pilgrimage, compared notes and soon found that we had very similar thoughts and a desire to write from the heart. We talked about little things we did as children.  In spite of the difference in our ages, our memories, beliefs and feelings were so very similar. So, we wrote about how little actions displaying love for God would please Him just as little acts of love and kindness please people. And&#8211;we went on from there to create a series of books for children.</p>
<p><em>6. </em><em> Have any of your books earned special recognition?</em></p>
<p>Donna:  Our 4<sup>th</sup> book, <em>Living the 10 Commandments for Children</em>, won 2<sup>nd</sup> place in the children’s category for the 2008 North American Catholic Press Association.  That was a real thrill for us.<em> </em></p>
<p>Rosemarie:<em> </em>This same book has also been printed in Lithuanian at the request of a priest who enjoyed it while in America!</p>
<p><em>7. </em><em>Have any of your stories been inspired by real people or events?  What inspires you to write? </em></p>
<p>Rosemarie: Most everything I write is inspired by real people or shared life experiences. I notice that in Donna&#8217;s work also. Her love and compassion shines through her words. The book she is self publishing at this time emphasizes pre teens respecting and caring about others &#8212;social justice.  <em>Icky, CeCe and the Mysterious Mr. Thuan</em> is due to be released at the end of November.</p>
<p><em>8. </em><em>Do you work on more than one book at a time? </em></p>
<p>Donna:  I think this is sometimes one of our strengths, and a potential pitfall.  While Rosemarie is a focused writer, I tend to work on more than one topic at a time.  As a result, I am slower in brining any one project to fruition.  I tend to write in response to an inner calling.  Rosemarie is the disciplined one.</p>
<p>Rosemarie:  Donna and I get a chuckle out of the fact that our Myers-Briggs Type Indicator results are on target. I seek closure on each project before beginning another. Donna is comfortable beginning several projects. I believe we complement each other with these opposite characteristics. I speed her up on each project and she slows me down to make sure our words are what we really want to say.</p>
<p><em>9. </em><em>Which of your books did you most enjoy writing?</em></p>
<p>Rosemarie:  It&#8217;s a tossup between <em>The Beatitudes for Children </em>and <em>The 10 Commandments</em> <em>for Children</em>. I learned a lot as we wrote about current life in relation to God&#8217;s teachings. My favorite adult piece was the story of the unexpected death of my granddaughter on the day my son came home from the Gulf war. That writing was therapeutic and helped me resolve her death. It took 2 years to write.</p>
<p>Donna:  For me, my favorite book it is definitely <em>Just Like Mary</em>.  Written for preschool aged</p>

<p>children, this book helped me answer a question from when I was a little girl.  I was always told that Mary, the mother of God, is to be my role model.  I couldn’t understand how to do that.  But writing this book helped me answer how we all can be just like Mary.</p>
<p><em>10. </em><em>What are you working on now?</em>Donna:  We have a couple of projects we are working on.  We have two children’s books:  one on Purgatory, and one on Priests.  I am working on a series of middle grade novels.  And we are experimenting with developing one of our books as an animated book for an ipad.</p>
<p><em>11. </em><em>Are you signed exclusively with a publisher?  Are you self published and how does that work for you? </em></p>
<p>Donna:  We have not signed exclusively with any one publisher, but to date, all of our children’s books have been published by Our Sunday Visitor.  That has been a wonderful relationship we hope will continue.  I am also currently working on self publishing my middle grade novels.  I am working on a series of 4 middle grade novels, each one which addresses a different issue related to social justice:  homelessness, the plight of the refugee, etc.  These books will appeal to that segment of our population who embraces conservative values.  As you know, this is a small, niche market.  So I have ventured into the realm of self publishing.  I am working with an editor who has some experience in this area and feel confident this is a plausible way to go.  With the help of social networking, Amazon and e-bay, marketing the books has become, while not easy, certainly possible.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>12.  <em> Do you do school visits, if so what question do children ask you most</em>?</p>
<p>Rosemarie:  I love doing school visits! Last year I read to a pre-school in Northern Virginia and had a wonderful time with 4 year olds.  Last week, I read snippets from<em> Little Acts of</em> <em>Grace 2 </em>to the Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. They were a great audience, wanting to participate as well as listen. I also read <em>A Really Scary Time</em> to 3rd and 4th graders. We sang the World War ll songs from the book. Donna and I have had opportunities to speak to children and their parents at PTO meetings in the public school and at a Military base. We both enjoy talking to adults and to children.</p>

Her daughter Lauren follows in her footsteps as a co-administator who thinks outside the box.  So it was no surprise that the <a title="Naudain Academy - Montessori" href="http://www.naudainacademy.com/" target="_blank">Naudain Academy</a>, where peace education has been a mainstay for students for many years, decided to introduce  the YOUNG MASTERS LITTLE WISDOM DISCOVERY PROGRAM to it&#8217;s  extended Day (Kindergarten) students.  What is a Young Master?  Read on and find out about this incredible program that teaches core values and life skills to children 4-8.<br />

<p>Stephanie Pelly who teaches this self-discovery program in the New Jersey area, conducted the first of thirteen classes this week, by asking the children what they thought a Young Master was.   &#8220;Someone who shares, a person who is peaceful, someone who does karate or ballet,  a person who is loving and someone who helps others,&#8221; were some of the answers.  One little girl asked, &#8220;Are you going to teach us how to care for ourselves and others?&#8221;  &#8221;All great answers&#8221;, Stephanie commented and then went on to explain.&#8221;We&#8217;re all born with special gifts that we can share with others, &#8220;said Stephanie,  &#8221;these gifts are not necessarily presents that you give to people that you buy from a store, but rather gifts that you can share from your heart -  they&#8217;re the secrets of the heart.  A Young Master is you!,&#8221; she said, &#8220;learning how to use those gifts.&#8221;  The children were fascinated.</p>

<p><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1203.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2050" title="Tools for teaching the Young Masters LIttle Wisdom Discovery Program" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1203-261x300.jpg" alt="" width="261" height="300" /></a>During the 13 week program, that spreads across the 2011-2012 school year, they will discover six different <em>Secrets of the Heart. </em>There is one book, chocked full with music and story for each secret.  Stephanie  asked the students if they would like to discover the first <em>Secret of the Heart</em>.  With great enthusiasm they all screamed YES and from her little red treasure bag, she pulled out our first <em>secret </em>- FRIENDSHIP!  The children were very excited.</p>

<p>Before they read the story, she shared the <em>Young Masters Pledge</em> with them and they repeated after her , &#8220;I promise to use my gifts every day, in every way, for I am a Young Master!&#8221;  This group of 24 students were fast learners and proudly said the pledge a second time holding up their peace fingers as they spun around smiling and standing proud.</p>

<p><a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/FS-flat.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2059" title="The Friendship Seed Product Shot" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/FS-flat-300x270.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="270" /></a>Stephanie then introduced the first book in the series YOUNG MASTERS &#8211; <em>The Friendship Seed</em>.  She explained how Bunny Hull, the author used her imagination to create characters like Buttan, EEtha and Phlyos for the stories.  The children listened carefully to the words of the story and learned that a smile is like a &#8220;friendship seed&#8221; they can share with anyone, anytime. They talked about how friendship grows when you share a smile or kind words with a friend.  One child said, &#8220;You can plant a Friendship Seed when you ask a friend to play with you.&#8221; &#8220;So right,&#8221; said Stephanie.</p>

<p>They talked about how they&#8217;re all connected.  They took turns saying &#8220;I am a good friend because&#8230; &#8221; and they each shared their own unique answer.  Some children stood up and said, &#8220;because I respect others, because I am helpful, because I share.&#8221; They giggled as they talked about caring for their friends, making others laugh and being kind.  Concepts of friendship were taking root.</p>

<p>Stephanie pointed out to the children that on the work mat she had a stone statue called <em>the circle of friends</em>.  They listened to words of the music on the books CD as  together they made a a circle of <em>friendship</em> and each child took a turn standing up in a circle and sharing their wonderful affirmations about <em>friendship</em>.  They took turns connecting fingers together with the person next to them and they held hands.  The children were asked to think about what it meant to be a good friend and to notice the differences in each other. &#8220;Do all friends look alike and act the same?&#8221; asked Stephanie. &#8220;Friends look different, they have beautiful different color skin, they may like different things, a different sport, or different game, but they&#8217;re still great friends.&#8221;</p>

Young Masters Little Wisdom Discovery Program" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1522-204x300.jpg" alt="" width="204" height="300" /></a>They created a <em>friendship chain</em> together where each child took two pieces of colored paper cut in strips and wrote their name and what makes them a good friend.  They connected their chain of answers, words like helpful, kind, share and play together.  Their understanding was growing. At the end they talked about how the <em>friendship chain</em> has many different colors. The colors can represent the differences in friends like, the different likes we may have or different talents. It was clear the children liked this idea.  Their <em>friendship chain</em> will hang on their holiday tree for the next month.  They were encouraged to create a friendship chain at home with their families.</p>
<p>A deep exploration of friendship for children, designed to teach them <a href="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1226.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2052" title="The friendship chain" src="http://dreamaworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/IMG_1226-254x300.jpg" alt="" width="152" height="180" /></a>that they are each Young Masters with many gifts to share&#8230;<em>the secrets of the heart</em>.  This is no doubt a highlight for the children at <a href="http://www.naudainacademy.com/" target="_blank">Naudain Academy</a>.   They closed with the Young Masters Pledge.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hollywood, California &#8211; It was a joyful day as eighty plus Young Masters at Selma Elementary recently showed what they learned and graduated from Dream A World Education Inc.&#8217;s six-week Secrets of the Heart residency program for kindergarten and first grade.</p>

<p>This very effective program utilizes the arts to teach kindergarten students about friendship and a smile through the art of music and songwriting, kindness through the art of dance, imagination through theatre arts and storytelling and gratitude through the visual arts.  The program, designed by Bunny Hull, Dream A World founder and Executive Director of Dream A World Education, Inc., has been recently modified in order to continue the Secrets of the Heart theme through to the end of the school year.  Principal, Dr. Michelle Windmueller says, &#8220;The program brought something so special to Selma.  It fundamentally changed the way the children saw themselves. We expect to have this program here for years to come.&#8221;</p>

<p>Funding for Secrets of the Heart is provided by outside resources, corporate sponsorships, foundations and by individual donors who see the value and benefit it provides for children in their most formative years..</p>
<p>Secrets of the Heart is currently at Gardner Elementary in Hollywood and will then go to Cabrillo Elementary in January of 2012.<br />
